This specimen was struck for French Polynesia by the Paris mint, which has issued this type since 1972. A closely related type without "I.E.O.M." on the obverse (KM 6) was issued 1967-70. French Polynesia is better known to English speakers as Tahiti. This coin shares a common obverse with other types issued for various French colonies, such as New Caledonia and the New Hebrides. The reverse features the vanilla bean and the breadfruit.
