Stack's Bowers May 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72154

This specimen was lot 72154 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRENCH INDO-CHINA. Centime, 1920-A. Paris Mint. PCGS MS-65 Red. This handsome Choice Red Centime displays a rich luster and strong details throughout." This type was struck at Paris 1908-23, 1926-31, 1937-39 and this is common date. More were struck at San Francisco in 1920-21 without mintmark (KM 12.2). French Indochina was occupied by the Japanese in 1940. French attempts to reoccupy the area after World War Two were challenged by Ho Chi Minh and the Viet Minh, leading to French defeat and withdrawal in 1954. The colony was divided into Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.
