This specimen was lot 70145 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2020), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRENCH INDO-CHINA. 2 Sapeque, 1887-A. Paris Mint. NGC MS-64 Red Brown. Enticingly red-brown and brilliant, this tremendous near Gem is tied with just five other specimens at NGC for the finest at this designation, with just one red example being finer." This denomination passed for two-fifths of a cent. It was struck 1887-1902 and this date is common. A similar type was struck in 1879 and 1885 for the preceding colonial organization, French Cochin China.
