French Cochin China 1884-A cent

This specimen was lot 2072 in Stephen Album sale 43 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2022), where it sold for $450. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRENCH COCHINCHINA: AE centime, 1884-A, an attractive mint state example! PCGS graded MS62 BN, ex Joe Sedillot Collection." Cochin China, the French name for the part of Vietnam around the Mekong delta and Saigon, was conquered by them in the 1860's. Coins were issued for the colony in 1879 and 1884-85 before the region was reorganized as French Indochina in 1885.
