This specimen was lot 1504 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it sold for 850 CHF (about US$1,052 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Französisch Cochin China 50 Cent 1879. Fast FDC. (French Cochin China, fifty cent of 1879, choice uncirculated.)"
Cochin China, the French name for the part of Vietnam around the Mekong delta and Saigon, was conquered by them in the 1860's. Coins were issued for the colony in 1879 and 1884-85 before the region was reorganized as French Indochina in 1885.
Recorded mintage: 180,000 plus proofs.
