Frankfurt 1639-AM ducat Fr-972
This specimen was lot 1387 in Jean Elsen sale 151 (Brussels, June 2022), where it sold for €800 (about US$1,000 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ALLEMAGNE, FRANCFORT, Ville impériale, AV ducat, 1639. D/ Ecu de la ville dans un cartouche orné. R/ Inscription en cinq lignes dans un cadre orné. Légères traces d'ajustage. Superbe. (Germany, imperial city of Frankfurt, gold ducat of 1639. Obverse: city arms in an ornate cartouche; reverse: five line inscription in an ornate tablet. Light adjustment marks, Extremely Fine.)"
This type is listed for 1633-44. While much more available than the contemporary double ducat (Fr-971), it is not common.
