Jean Elsen sale 116, lot 1633
France 1991 centime rev JElsen 116-1633.jpg

This specimen was lot 1633 in Jean Elsen sale 116 (Brussels, March 2013), where it sold for €400 (about US$607 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Cinquième République (1959- ), 1 centime, 1991, 2511 p. frappées. Rare. presque Superbe (France, Fifth Republic (1959-) one centime of 1991. Rare, about extremely fine.)"

This specimen is a rare date of a type struck at the Paris mint 1962-2001. Struck in large numbers in the sixties and seventies, in later years inflation caused the mint to skip years where possible. Altho all dates were struck for the mint sets sold to collectors, the last date struck for circulation was 1979. The five centimes of 1961-64 shares this stainless steel design.

Recorded mintage: 2,000 in proof plus 2,511 for mint sets[2].

Specification: 1.65 g, stainless steel, 15 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: F.106/48, Gad-91.
