France 1980 50 francs
This specimen was lot 30829 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $8,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold Proof Piefort 50 Francs 1980 PR68 Ultra Cameo NGC, Paris mint. Free of tone or haze, this superbly cameoed piefort is also without significant flaws due to careless handling. With the Ultra Cameo designation, unsurpassed in technical grade at NGC as well. Sold with the original box of issue and COA." This specimen is from a type struck at the Paris mint for France 1974-80 altho 1980 saw the denomination struck only for collector sets.
Recorded mintage: 60,000 for sets plus 500 in gold (KM P681) and 2,500 in silver (KM P680).
