This specimen is a slightly scarce date of a type struck at the Paris mint 1938-40 and 1945-47. This was issued as the Third Republic debated whether to resist or welcome Nazi aggression. A few five francs are known struck in nickel.

Recorded mintage: 10,144,400 for 1938-39.

Specification: 12 g, aluminum bronze, 31 mm diameter, designed by André-Henri Lavrillier (1885-1958).
