This specimen was lot 22388 in Heritage sale 61352 (Dallas, December 2023), where it sold for $420. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Republic gold 20 Francs 1899-A AU58 NGC, Paris mint." The type was struck in Paris 1899-1906; later issues had the edge lettered LIBERTE+EGALITE+FRATERNITE. The only dates available in proof are 1899 and 1900. American coin dealers refer to these coins as "roosters."
Recorded mintage: 1,500,000 plus a few proofs.
Specification: 6.45 g, 0.900 fine gold, 21 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Jules-Clément Chaplain (1839-1909).
