Sincona sale 51, lot 2453

This specimen was lot 2453 in Sincona sale 51 (Zürich, October 2018), where it sold for 425 CHF (about US$513 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"Louis Philippe, 1830-1848. 20 Francs 1841 W, Lille. Selten. Nur 8524 Exemplare geprägt. Sehr schön. (kingdom of France, Louis Philippe, 1830-48, twenty francs of 1841, Lille mint. Rare. Only 8524 pieces struck, Very fine.)"

The specimen shown is a twenty francs struck at the Paris mint during the regime of Louis Philippe of France (r. 1830-48). This type, struck 1832-48, was recalled in 1928 and demonetized in 2005 but ceased to circulate during World War One. It superseded the Tiolier head used 1830-31 (F.524 and F.525). Branch mint issues include Rouen (mintmark "B"), Lille (mintmark "W") and Bayonne (mintmark "L"). This date is rare and is unknown in choice condition.

Specification: 21 mm diameter, 6.45 grams, 0.900 fine gold, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. Designed by Jean-Pierre Droz (1746-1823) and Pierre Joseph Tiolier (1763-1819). This specimen 6.39 g.

Recorded Mintage: 8,482[1].
