This specimen was lot 22160 in Heritage sale 61352 (Dallas, December 2023), where it sold for $504. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Louis XVI 1/5 Ecu (24 Sols) 1784-A MS63 NGC, Paris mint. An engaging Choice Mint State specimen expressing notable cartwheel luster and flashy argent surfaces." This specimen is an cinquième d'écu au buste habillé struck at the Paris mint, one of a type struck there in 1774-92. Orleans and Lille also struck this coin in 1784. It was demonetized in 1804, unlike the écu and demi-écu, which were demonetized in 1834. The shorter period of circulation means more high grade survivors exist despite the small mintages.

Specification: silver, 11 deniers (.917 fine), 41.5 pieces to the mark (5.83 g), face value 24 sols, 26-27 mm diameter. Engraved by Benjamin Duvivier.
