This specimen was lot 22160 in Heritage sale 61352 (Dallas, December 2023), where it sold for $504. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Louis XVI 1/5 Ecu (24 Sols) 1784-A MS63 NGC, Paris mint. An engaging Choice Mint State specimen expressing notable cartwheel luster and flashy argent surfaces." This specimen is a cinquième d'écu au buste habillé struck at the Paris mint, one of a type struck there in 1774-92. Orleans and Lille also struck this coin in 1784. It was demonetized in 1804, unlike the écu and demi-écu, which were demonetized in 1834. The shorter period of circulation means more high grade survivors exist despite the small mintages.

Recorded mintage: 12,960.

Specification: silver, 11 deniers (.917 fine), 41.5 pieces to the mark (5.83 g), face value 24 sols, 26-27 mm diameter. Engraved by Benjamin Duvivier.
