This specimen was lot 99040 in Heritage sale 61259 (Dallas, TX, February 2022), where it sold for $1,050. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Louis XIV 1/4 Ecu 1679-& VF35 NGC, Aix mint. 1/4 Ecu a la cravate. An infrequently seen fractional Ecu with this coveted bust type, with fully metallic appearances complemented by amber peripheries lending to an advanced aesthetic for a mid-grade representative." This type was struck 1676-84 in moderate quantities but was the victim of repeated "reformations," where older quart d'écus were called in and restruck. As a result, the type is rare today. It was succeeded by the quart d'écu aux 8 L of 1690-93. This is the last type with a plain edge; the reeded edge was introduced in 1690.

Recorded mintage: 127,748[2].

Specification: 6.86 g, 0.917 fine silver, 26-27 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Joseph Roëttiers.

Catalog reference: KM 234.4, Gad-146 (R2), Dupl-1495, Dr/4 № 681, Dr/2 № 378.
