France 1668-9 1/2 ecu
The specimen shown is a demi-écu juvénile struck at the Rennes mint during the reign of Louis XIV. Droulers[1] devotes catalog numbers 530 thru 557 to describe the numerous variations of this bust, introduced in 1659 when the king was 21 years old. This issue is a better date of the type. Altho the succeeding bust, the demi-écu à la cravate, was introduced in 1672, demi-écus juvéniles are known dated as late as 1680. This specimen was lot 1838 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €1,100 (about US$1,483 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"FRANKREICH, KÖNIGREICH, Louis XIV, 1643-1715. 1/2 Ecu au buste juvénile 1668, Münzzeichen "9", Rennes. Kl. Justierspuren, vorzüglich. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, half écu of the young bust of 1668, Rennes mint. Adjustment marks, extremely fine.)"
