Jean Elsen sale 162, lot 1895
JE162-1895r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1895 in Jean Elsen sale 162 (Brussels, June 2025), where it sold for €260 (about US$360 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR écu à la mèche longue, 1650 N, Montpellier. D/ B. enfantin, l., dr. et cuir. à d. R/ Écu de France couronné. Rare. Légère fin de plaque. Belle patine. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, écu of the long lock of 1650, Montpellier mint. Obverse: draped and armored infant bust right; reverse: crowned arms of France. Rare, nice toning, Very Fine.)"

Montpellier struck this type 1647-52. This date, tho scarce, is not as rare as the reported mintage would suggest. Many of the mints were seized by Frondeurs and their output fraudulently underreported.

Recorded mintage: 4,173 but not a rare date.

Specification: 27.45 g, 0.917 fine silver, plain edge, designed by Jean Warin and Isaac Briot, this specimen 27,17 g.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 441, Dr/2 № 298, Dav-3799, KM 155.12, Dupl. 1469; Gad-202.
