H3096-30165r.jpg

This specimen was lot 30165 in Heritage auction 3096 (Dallas, TX, March 2021), where it sold for $3,480. The catalog description[1] noted,

"France. Louis XIV gold Louis d'Or 1650-F UNC Details (Obverse Scratched) NGC, Angers mint. Hailing from the obscure and relatively short-lived mint of Angers, which operated for only approximately 50 years before ceasing operations in 1661, this admirable representative displays a fully Mint State level of preservation. Well-struck with only a hint of rub over Louis' cheek, the devices otherwise sharp and held within fields expressing shimmering mint luster at every turn, coupled with a faint amber tone residing over the surfaces with fitting grace and visual splendor. Ex. Hess-Divo Auction 293 (October 2002, Lot 23). From the Paramount Collection."

This louis d'or à la mèche longue is among the more available louis of Louis XIV. It is still an expensive coin and this is a rare date.

Recorded mintage: 1,196.

Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, plain edge, designed by Jean Warin.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 345, KM 157.7, Fr-418, Gad-245, Ciani-1787.
