Jean Elsen sale 127, lot 1333

This specimen was lot 1333 in Jean Elsen sale 127 (Brussels, December 2015), where it sold for €200 (about US$257 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Henri III (1574-1589), AV écu d'or au soleil, 1583B, Rouen. D/ Ecu de France couronné, sous un soleil. La légende débutant en bas. R/ Croix fleurdelisée, un quadrilobe en coeur. Trou rebouché. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Henry III, 1574-89, gold écu d'or of the sunburst of 1583, Rouen mint. Obverse: crowned arms of France below a sunburst; reverse: floriate cross with quadrilobe at center. Plugged, very fine.)"

This coin is called the écu d'or au soleil in Duplessy[2] with a face value of fifty sols tournois. Four major variations exist: type 1 (Sb 4924), with "P·REX" in the king's title; type 2 (Sb 4928), with the king's titles starting at the top; type 3 (Sb 4932, shown here), with the king's title starting at the bottom, and type 4 (Sb 4936) with the king's title on the cross side.
