This specimen was lot 10206 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $329. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/2 Franc, 1577-E. NGC EF-45. Henry III (1574-89). Date faces inward on obverse. Minor doubling. Toned with attractive luster. NGC EF-45. From the Demarete Collection." The specimen shown is a demi-franc au col fraisé of Henry III of France (r. 1574-89) struck by the hammer at the Tours mint (mintmark "E") in 1577. Duplessy lists this type for 1575-89. Many varieties exist.
Recorded mintage: unknown but a rare date.
