Sincona Auction 103, lot 481

This specimen was lot 481 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), where it sold for 1,200 CHF (about US$1,829 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH Königreich und Republik, Charles IX. 1560-1574. Ecu d'or au soleil 1569 N, Montpellier. Seltene Münzstätte. Vorzüglich. Knapper Schrötling. (kingdom of France, Charles IX, 1560-74, gold écu of the sunburst of 1569, Montpellier mint. Rare mint, Extremely Fine, Small flan.)"

This coin is called the écu d'or au soleil in Duplessy with a face value of fifty sols tournois and is noted with many variations in obverse and reverse legends. Sombart[2] reports two known of this date.

Recorded mintage: 818[2].

Specification: 3.37 g, 0.958 fine gold, plain edge, this specimen 3.34 g.
