France (1515-40) grand blanc
This specimen was lot 1060 in Jean Elsen sale 145 (Brussels, September 2020), where it sold for €95 (about US$135 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, Royaume, François Ier (1515-1547), Billon grand blanc de Bretagne, Rennes. 2e type. D/ Ecu de France sous une couronnelle, entre un lis et une moucheture d'hermine couronnés. R/ Croix échancrée cantonnée de deux mouchetures d'hermine et deux F couronnés. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Francis I, 1515-47, billon large blank of Brittany, Rennes mint, second type. Obverse: arms of France under a coronet between a crowned lily and a crowned ermine; reverse: cross cantonned with two ermines and two crowned "F's". Very Fine.)"
This granc blanc was produced at many mints with many subtypes. This variety, struck for Brittany, was struck at Rennes (shown here) and Nantes. It was worth twelve deniers tournois, the same as the douzain, and is often confused with it.
