Florence (1505)-F carlino
This specimen was lot 1405 in Jean Elsen sale 161 (Brussels, March 2025), where it sold for €400 (about US$521 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIE, FLORENCE, AR carlino, 1505, 1er semestre. Monétaire Filippo di Niccolo di Andrea Sacchetti. D/ ·+· FLOR-ENTIA· Grande fleur de lis. R/ ·S· IO· BAP-TIZANS· Saint Jean-Baptiste bénissant le Christ. Différent: écu sous la lettre F. Rare. Belle patine. (Italy, republic of Florence, silver carlino of 1505, first semester, moneyer Filippo di Niccolo di Andrea Sacchetti. Obverse: large fleur-de-lys; reverse: St. John the Baptist blessing Christ; privy mark a shield below the letter 'F'. Rare, nice patina, Very Fine.)"
The carlino is a denomination better known in Naples and the Papal States. The republic of Florence collapsed in the 1530's and was reconstituted as the grand duchy of Tuscany with a Medici as grand duke.
