Jean Elsen sale 148, lot 463

This specimen was lot 463 in Jean Elsen sale 148 (Brussels, September 2021), where it sold for €1,300 (about US$1,843 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIE, FLORENCE, République (1189-1532), AV fiorino d'oro, 1470, 1er semestre. Monétaire: Domenico di Niccolo di Ugolino Martelli. D/ + FLOR-ENTIA Lis florentin. R/ ·S· IOHA-NNES B· (différent: marteaux croisés et ·d·) Saint Jean-Baptiste deb. de f., ten. une croix. Très Beau à Superbe. Provient de Lanz, Munich, vente 29, 7-8 mai 1984, 970. (Italy, republic of Florence, gold florin of 1470, first semester. Obverse: fleur-de-lys; reverse: St. John the Baptist facing, bearing a cross. Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

The gold florin was intended to compete with the Venetian ducat but is today much scarcer.
