Jean Elsen sale 148, lot 459

This specimen was lot 459 in Jean Elsen sale 148 (Brussels, September 2021), where it sold for €800 (about US$1,134 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIE, FLORENCE, République (1189-1532), AV fiorino d'oro, 1316, 1er semestre. Différent: mors (Lapo di Iacopo del Giudice). D/ + FLOR-ENTIA Lis florentin. R/ ·S·IOHA-NNES· B· Saint Jean Baptiste deb. de f., ten. une croix. Griffe au droit. Très Beau. (Italy, republic of Florence, gold florin of 1316, first semester. Obverse: fleur-de-lys; reverse: St. John the Baptist facing, bearing a cross. Scratch on obverse, Very Fine.)"

The gold florin was intended to compete with the Venetian ducat but is today much scarcer.
