Jean Elsen sale 153, lot 863

This specimen was lot 863 in Jean Elsen sale 153 (Brussels, December 2022), where it sold for €550 (about US$696 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIE, FLORENCE, République (1189-1532), AR fiorino d'oro, 1311, 1er semestre. Monétaire Donato di Lamberto della Antena. D/ + FLOR-ENTIA Fleur de lis. R/ + ·S·IOHA-NNES B Saint Jean-Baptiste deb. de f., ten. une croix longue. En haut à g., une ramure de cerf. Beau à Très Beau. (Italy, republic of Florence, 1189-1532, gold florin of 1311, first semester. Obverse: fleur-de-lys; reverse: St. John the Baptist facing, bearing a long cross, deer's antlers to the upper left. Fine - Very Fine)"

The gold florin was intended to compete with the Venetian ducat but is today much scarcer.
