Flanders 1680 patagon Dav-4494
This specimen was lot 993 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €260 (about US$338 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Karel II (1665-1700), AR patagon, 1680, Brugge. Vz/ Gekroond stokkenkruis met een vuurijzer tussen het jaartal en het juweel van het Gulden Vlies. Kz/ Gekroond wapenschild omringd door de keten van het Gulden Vlies. Korte muntplaat, met barst. goede Zeer Fraai. (county of Flanders, Charles II, 1665-1700, silver patagon of 1680, Bruges mint. Obverse: Burgundian cross below a crown, with the jewels of the Order of the Golden Fleece. Reverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Tight flan, an edge crack, good Very Fine.)"
This type was struck at the Bruges mint 1666-80, 1683-92 for the degenerate Charles II. The SCWC notes the Flemish issues as the most common, followed by the Brabant issue (Dav-4491), tho none are plentiful today. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.
Reported Mintage: unknown but a fairly common date.
Specification: 28.10 g, 0.875 fine silver, this specimen 27,30 g.
