Jean Elsen sale 143, lot 1332

This specimen was lot 1332 in Jean Elsen sale 143 (Brussels, December 2019), where it sold for €2,600 (about US$3,395 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Karel II (1665-1700), AR dukaton, 1684, Brugge. Tweede type. Vz/ Bb. van de koning r. met lang haar en halsketting van het Gulden Vlies. Kz/ Gekroond wapenschild gesteund door twee leeuwen. Onderaan het juweel van het Gulden Vlies. Van de grootste zeldzaamheid Gereinigd vondstexemplaar. Krasjes. Zeer Fraai. (county of Flanders, Charles II, 1665-1700, silver ducaton of 1684, Bruges mint, second type. Obverse: long-haired bust of the king, right; reverse: crowned arms supported by two lions. Extremely rare, scratches, Very Fine.)"

The SCWC lists this rare type for 1684, 1687 and 1689 only without pricing any date. Its rarity suggests the economic crisis in the Spanish Netherlands during a period of protracted warfare.
