Flanders 1673 1/2 patagon
This specimen was lot 1057 in Jean Elsen sale 156 (Brussels, September 2023), where it sold for €90 (about US$116 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Karel II (1665-1700), AR halve patagon, 1673, Brugge. Vz/ Gekroond stokkenkruis met een vuurijzer tussen het jaartal en het juweel van het Gulden Vlies. Kz/ Gekroond wapenschild omringd door de keten van het Gulden Vlies. Zeldzaam. Fraai à Zeer Fraai. (county of Flanders, Charles II, 1665-1700, silver half patagon of 1673, Bruges mint. Obverse: Burgundian cross under a crown, jewels of the Golden Fleece around; reverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Scarce, Fine - Very Fine.)"
This type was struck in Bruges for the degenerate Charles II in 1667-69, 1672-75, 1680, 1686-89. It is much scarcer than the contemporary patagon (Dav-4494) but brings about the same price. Most are poorly struck on bad planchets and collectible specimens are few.
Recorded mintage: unknown but the most common date.
