Flanders 1646 patagon Dav-4464
This specimen was lot 1054 in Jean Elsen sale 156 (Brussels, September 2023), where it sold for €80 (about US$103 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Philips IV (1621-1665), AR patagon, 1646, Brugge. Vz/ Gekroond stokkenkruis met een vuurijzer tussen het jaartal en het juweel van het Gulden Vlies. Kz/ Gekroond wapenschild omringd door de keten van het Gulden Vlies. Krasjes. bijna Zeer Fraai. (county of Flanders, Philip IV, 1621-65, silver patagon of 1646, Bruges mint. Obverse: Burgundian cross under a crown, jewels of the Golden Fleece around; reverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Scratches, about Very Fine.)"
Patagons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the seventeenth century, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and ducatons. The type shown here was struck at the Bruges mint 1622-23, 1628, 1631-33, 1636-65 and many dates are listed quite inexpensively. Patagons were also struck in Tournai, Artois, Burgundy, Luxemburg and Brabant. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.
