Flanders 1582 1/2 noble Fr-245
This specimen was lot 552 in Jean Elsen sale 137 (Brussels, June 2018), where it sold for €850 (about US$1,183 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"VLAANDEREN, Gent in opstand tegen Philips II (1581-1584), AV halve gouden nobel, 1582. Met Vlaamse leeuw in de banier. Vz/ Gekroonde krijger in een schip met zwaard en leeuwenschild. Op de achtersteven, leeuwtje een banier met een leeuw houdend. In het veld, N-T. Kz/ Gebloemd kruis in een achtpas met lelies op de uiteinden en in het hart een roosje. In de hoeken vier gekroonde leeuwen. Zeer zeldzaam Vouwspoor. Zeer Fraai à Prachtig. (county of Flanders, Ghent in revolt against Philip II, 1581-84, gold half noble of 1582, lion on banner. Obverse: crowned king in ship with sword and shield; on the stern, a lion holding a banner with a lion on it, "N-T" in the field. Reverse: floriate cross with lilies and crowned lions in the field and a rose in the center. Very rare, creased, very fine to extremely fine.)"
Ghent was already declining in importance when the rebellion started but never recovered her position after Philip II devastated it in 1584. Her harbor silted up and trade shifted to the north. This type was accompanied by full (Fr-242) and quarter nobles.
