Stephen Album sale 50, lot 866

This specimen was lot 866 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "BELGIUM: FLANDERS: Maria van Bourgondië, 1477-1482, AR double briquet, 1480, an early dated coin, clearly dated 1480, Brugge Mint, two lions seated viz-à-viz; briquet above // coat of arms of Burgundy on cross fleurée, rough planchet with areas of weakness as usual, About XF, ex Dr. Robert A. Rosenfeld Collection." Maria was the daughter of Charles the Rash and the heiress to his domain between France and Germany. She was duchess of Burgundy, Brabant, Limburg, Luxemburg and Guelders and countess of Flanders, Artois, Hainaut, Holland, Zeeland, Namur and Zutphen and the most desirable match of her day. She married Maximilian of Hapsburg to keep her lands out of the hands of Louis XI of France but died in 1482 at the age of 25. This type was struck 1477-81 and is among the first dated coins of Europe.
