The Republic of Finland was established in 1917 after prior domination by Russia. The coinage of Finland was reformed in 1963, with 100 old markkaa = 1 new markka. This specimen was lot 1859 in Goldberg sale 93 (Los Angeles, September 2016), where it sold for $352.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Finland. 1000 Markkaa, 1997 Choice Brilliant Proof. 80th Anniversary of Independence. With case and certificate. Choice Brilliant Proof."

Recorded mintage: 20,000 proofs.

Specification: 6.64 g, 0.900 fine gold, designed by Reijo Paavilainen.
