Finland 1896 10 pennia
This specimen was lot 70533 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "FINLAND. 10 Pennia, 1896. Nicholas II. NGC MS-64 Brown. This beautifully preserved near-Gem example displays lovely rich chocolate brown patina with smooth satiny surfaces and a nice cartwheel effect." This type is listed for 1895-1917 and is the last issue of this denomination under the Tsarist regime. This date is fairly common but not as available as the wartime issues. Russian defeats in World War One enabled the Finns, who had long chafed under Russian rule, to declare independence.
