Ferrara H3040-30138r.jpg
the duchy of Ferrara in 1494

This specimen was lot 30138 in Heritage sale 3040 (Chicago, April 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Ferrara. Alfonso I d'Este gold Scudo d'oro del Sole ND (1505-34) MS63 NGC. A stunning example of this type featuring the cross on Calvary with the spear and sponge-rod. The surfaces are fully lustrous and bear no significant marks. Faint ghosting of the obverse arms into the reverse fields is noted along with minor touches of striking weakness, probably the primary reason this example could not have been awarded a higher technical grade." This type seems to have superseded the earlier ducats (Fr-265). Alfonso was also duke of Modena.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.25 g, 0.917 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-269, MIR-269, CNI X-14.
