Falkland Islands 1974 5 pounds
This specimen was lot 70424 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, February 2020), where it sold for $2,280. The catalog description[1] noted, "FALKLAND ISLANDS. 5 Pounds, 1974. NGC PROOF-67 Ultra Cameo. Essentially flawless with a depiction of a local sheep. 1.175 ounces of pure gold contained." The Falkland Islands, off the coast of Argentina in the south Atlantic Ocean, last made the news in 1982, when Argentina attempted to conquer the islands but were ousted by Her Majesty's Armed Forces. The islands remain a British dependency. This specimen came from a set comprising a half pound (Fr-4, KM-6); a one pound (Fr-3, KM 7); a two pounds (Fr-2, KM-8) and a five pounds (shown here).
