Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 55259

This specimen was lot 55259 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $1,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "ETHIOPIA. 50 Birr, 1972-NI. Italian (Numismatic Italiana) Mint. Haile Selassie I (Ras Tafari Makonnen). NGC PROOF-67 Ultra Cameo. Commemorating Empress Zauditu." This is one of a series of NCLT's struck in Italy to honor Haile Selassie's predecessors as emperor. It is dated 1972 AD and EE 1964. This design was also used on a silver five dollars (KM 51).

Recorded mintage: 16,000 proofs.

Specification: 20 g, 0.900 fine gold.
