This specimen was lot 31039 in Heritage auction 3096 (Dallas, TX, March 2021), where it sold for $2,520. The catalog description[1] noted, "Ethiopia: Haile Selassie I gold Proof "Emperor's Birth & Reign" 100 Dollars 1972-NI PR67 Ultra Cameo NGC, Numismatica Italiana mint. #48. A large issue commemorating Haile Selassie. From the Paramount Collection." This NCLT was one of a series of gold commemoratives issued to celebrate the emperor (KM 48, 49, 50, 51, 53, 55, 56, 57, KM 58). The emperor loved to present gold medallions as gifts and many types exist which blur the line between medals and coins. Haile Selassie was overthrown in 1974 and died in 1975. Ethiopia uses its own calendar, so AD 1972 = EE 1964.
