Eritrea, along the west coast of the Red Sea, was an Italian colony from 1889 until 1941, when it was seized by the British during World War Two. It was merged with Ethiopia in 1952 but the region remained restive. After decades of struggle, the Ethiopian regime gave up and granted Eritrea independence in 1991. This is from a series of circulating coinage issued in 1997, which series appears to be the only circulating coins for the country.
