Erfurt 1622 goldgulden Fr-916
This specimen was lot 1889 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €5,000 (about US$6,959 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ERFURT, STADT, Goldgulden 1622. Behelmtes Wappen, zu den Seiten des Helms die geteilte Jahreszahl 16 - ZZ, oben Rad//Verziertes, vierfeldiges Wappen (Kapellendorf, Vippach, Vieselbach und Vargula) mit Mittelschild Erfurter Rad. GOLD. RR Kräftige Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Erworben 1953 bei der Firma Grabow, Berlin. (Germany, city of Erfurt, goldgulden of 1622. Obverse: helmeted arms divide the date; reverse: quartered arms with the escutcheon of Erfurt. Very rare, strong patina, very fine to extremely fine. Bought from Grabow in 1953.)"
This rare type is also listed dated 1620. The color suggests debased gold. The town was occupied by the Swedish army 1631-48 during the Thirty Years War and issued many coins during that time.
