England (979-85) penny S-1144
This specimen was lot 405 in Jean Elsen sale 165 (Brussels, June 2026), where it sold for €380 (about US$523 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ANGLETERRE, Aethelred II (978-1016), AR penny, vers 979-985, Canterbury. First hand type. Monétaire Eadwold. D/ B. diad. à d. R/ + EΛDPOLD M-O CAENTPA La main de la Providence entre alpha et oméga. Nettoyé. Tréflage au droit. Très Beau. (kingdom of England, Aethelred II, 978-1016, silver penny, circa 979-985, Canterbury mint, first hand type, Eadwold moneyer. Obverse: diademed bust right reverse: the hand of God between alpha and omega. Cleaned, doubling on obverse, Very Fine.)"
The reign of Aethelred II, nicknamed "the Unready", saw the use of several designs of the silver penny as the moneyers tried to stay ahead of the counterfeiters.
