Sincona sale 79, lot 1083

This specimen was lot 1083 in Sincona sale 79 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 7,500 CHF (about US$8,989 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN | Königreich, Elizabeth I. 1558-1603. Angel n. d. (1572-1573), Tower Mint. Third and fourth issue. Mintmark ermine. Rare. NGC AU55." The angel was worth one third of a pound or six shillings eight pence. At the end of Elizabeth's reign and thru the reign of James I, its value was gradually raised so that by 1619, it was eleven shillings.
