England (1494-1501) penny S-2233
This specimen was lot 7176 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Penny, (1485-1509). Durham Mint. Henry VII. PCGS EF-45. A decently struck example for the type with a charcoal like patina throughout. From the Runze Collection." Skingley notes that this coin was issued by Richard Fox, consigliere to the king and bishop of Durham 1494-1501. Pennies were also struck at London, Canterbury and York, many by churchmen. The king favored appointing clergy to high office rather than rely on rebellious aristocrats. Other silver issues included groats, half groats, half pence and farthings.
Wikipedia notes, "Richard Foxe (sometimes Richard Fox) (c. 1448 – 5 October 1528) was an English churchman, the founder of Corpus Christi College, Oxford. He was successively Bishop of Exeter, Bath and Wells, Durham, and Winchester, and became also Lord Privy Seal."
