Jean Elsen sale 146, lot 981

This specimen was lot 981 in Jean Elsen sale 146 (Brussels, November 2020), where it sold for €260 (about US$379 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"GRANDE-BRETAGNE, Henri VI, 1er règne (1422-1461), AR groat, 1432/1433-1436, Calais. Leaf-mascle issue. D/ B. cour. de f. dans un polylobe. Une feuille sous le buste. R/ VIL-LA- CALI-SIE (feuille) Croix pattée longue coupant les légendes, cantonnée de quatre groupes de trois globules. Patine foncée. Très Beau. (kingdom of Great Britain, Henry I, first reign, 1422-61, silver groat of 1432-38, Calais mint, leaf-mascle issue. Obverse: head facing in polylobe, a leaf below the bust; reverse: long cross pattée divides the legend, cantonned with four groups of three pellets. Nice patina, Very Fine.)"

A groat was fourpence and first appeared in the reign of Edward I. The groat was struck during the reign of Henry VI over several issues and several mints (London and Calais but not York).
