Stack's Bowers September 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74683

This specimen was lot 74683 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 1/2 Groat (2 Pence), ND (1430-31). Calais Mint; @ mm. Henry VI. NGC EF-40. Rosette-mascle issue. Obverse: Crowned facing bust within tressure of arches; trefoils at cusps; Reverse: Long cross puttee; triple pellets in quarters; rosette and mascle in legend. Some circulation is evident, but this example remains wholesome and rather pleasing." The half groat was struck during the reign of Henry VI over several issues and several mints (London, Calais and York). This specimen is attributed to Calais by the "VILLA CALISIE" engraved in Gothic script on the reverse. The largest silver coin was the groat or four pence.
