England (1361-69) 1/4 noble Fr-97
The first specimen was lot 24860 in Heritage sale 3032 (Chicago, April 2014), where it sold for $1,527.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Edward III (1327-77) gold Quarter Noble 1361-69, London mint, Treaty Period, MS62 NGC. + o ЄDWARD : DЄI : GRA : AnGL, arms within polylobe / ЄXALTABITVR : In : GLORIA, ornate cross with leopards and quatrefoils in quarters, lis at center; all within tressure of arches. Well-struck with light tone over underlying luster. The flan is a little rough to one side, but few of the letters veer off-planchet." The second specimen was lot 1013 in Sincona sale 79 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 1,500 CHF (about US$1,798 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN | Königreich, Edward III. 1327-1377. 1/4 Noble n. d. (1361-1369), Calais. Fourth coinage, treaty period. Mintmark Cross. Cross over shield, quatrefoil in centre of reverse. Rare. NGC AU53. Minor rim nick." The quarter noble was introduced by Edward III as part of a monetary reform and was tariffed at twenty pence (1 shilling 8 pence) and was the first gold coin to circulate in several centuries.
