Sincona sale 79, lot 1003

This specimen was lot 1003 in Sincona sale 79 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 1,100 CHF (about US$1,318 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN | Königreich, Edward III. 1327-1377. 1/4 Noble n. d. (1351-1355), London. Fourth coinage, pre-treaty period, series B. Mintmark Cross. Pellet below shield, pellet in centre on reverse. Rare. NGC AU53." This quarter noble is distinguished from later issues of the reign by the presence of a Gothic "Є" in the center of the reverse; later issues had a lis. This denomination had a face value of one twelfth of a pound or one shilling eight pence.

Specification: 30 grains or 1.95 g, 0.995 fine gold, this specimen is 1.83 g.
