Canterbury mint

The pennies of Edward I come in dozens of varieties but being undated and unmintmarked, do not lend themselves to any sort of order. We show here three different kinds. The first specimen was lot 44538 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Penny, ND (1279-1307). Edward I. NGC EF-45. A well struck and centered Penny with nicely original fields and medium gray toning throughout." The second specimen was lot 44539 in the same sale, where it sold for $180. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Penny, ND (1279-1307). Edward I. NGC AU-53. A well detailed Penny with glossy surfaces that exhibit a strong blue tint." The third specimen was lot 44540 in the same sale, where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Penny, ND (1279-1307). Canterbury Mint. Edward I. PCGS AU-55 Gold Shield. S-1419. A decently struck and well centered Penny with dark, almost charcoal toning throughout. A wholesome, presentable example of the type. From the Sundial Valley Farms Collection."
