England (1138-39) penny
This specimen was lot 33568 in Heritage sale 3114 (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $3,960. The lot description[1] noted, "Great Britain: Stephen (1135-1154) Penny ND (1138-1139) AU58 NGC, York mint. Though not fully struck throughout, the obverse portrait (especially the facial features) of Stephen is wonderfully expressive, creating a specimen that is visually appealing beyond the already impressive Choice AU certification evaluation by NGC. This so-called 'Flag' type, is a scarce emission in the early silver British Penny series, and this near-Mint State example devoid of any problems deserving mention is a particularly impressive example. Often found damaged or with some sort of conditional qualifier, this offering is the only specimen of the type populating the NGC Census. The finest example we have ever offered and an offering that we anticipate will cause significant excitement among specialists. From the Abbeygate Collection."
