SB125-33020r.jpg

This specimen was lot 33020 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $2,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Penny, ND (ca. 1086-89). Southwark Mint; Osmund, moneyer. William II Rufus. NGC AU-58. Profile (BMC i) type. Obverse: + PILLELM REX, crowned and draped bust right, holding sword and breaking inner circle; Reverse: + OSMVND ON SUOEP, cross pattee, with annulet at center; all over cross fleuree in saltire. A wonderful representative of this VERY SCARCE issue, very closely bordering on Mint State with only the barest hint of wear evident on the highest points of the reverse. The portrait is quite strong and the design overall sharp, with attractive deep toning throughout. For completeness, a flan crack appears at 1 o'clock using the obverse orientation." William II, son of William the Conqueror, was killed in a hunting accident under very mysterious circumstances.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.925 fine silver, this specimen 1.22 g.

Catalog reference: S-1258; N-851.
