Elbing, Danzig and Thorn in the sixteenth century

This specimen was lot 11300 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for €4,320 (about US$4,503). The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN. Solidus/Schilling, 1657. Elbing Mint. Karl X Gustav. NGC MS 62. Variation with Solidvs Elbing in legend. Rare single year type in brilliant condition. From the L. E. Bruun Collection." However, Gustavus Adolphus never annexed it and it eventually returned to Polish control. This solidus or schilling was also struck with three crowns on the reverse (KM 57). One thaler was 270 solidi.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.51 g, silver, 16-17 mm diameter, this specimen 0.53 g.
