Elbing, Danzig and Thorn in the sixteenth century

This specimen was lot 11274 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for €125 (about US$130). The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN. 3 Groschen, 1631 ha. Elbing Mint. Gustav II Adolf. NGC Fine Details--Scratches. From the L. E. Bruun Collection. Ex. C. P. Humble Collection (Stockholm-1852) Lot # 485." Elbing, a port on the Vistula river, was long a rival to Danzig. It was occupied by the Swedes in the 1630's and used by them as a base during the Thirty Years War. However, Gustavus Adolphus never annexed it and it eventually returned to Polish control. This three groschen or trojak was struck 1631-33 in numerous varieties.
